The Wild Horse Refuge protects more than 230 American mustangs on 30,000 acres of sage, pinon, and juniper outside Craig, Colorado. Horses that would otherwise be rounded up on BLM land run free here in family bands across the open range. Guests visit for ranger-led tours and self-guided drives through the preserve, with lookouts positioned where bands often graze. The refuge is nonprofit and donation-supported; proceeds go directly to horse care. Open daily 9am to sunset; plan two to four hours with spotting scopes or binoculars.
