Five caves formed by a collapsed lava tube from the Newberry Volcano sit less than a mile from Redmond Municipal Airport, off SW Airport Way between the airport and the Deschutes County Fairgrounds. Native Americans sheltered here over the past 6,000 years, and today the BLM site is free to explore year-round, with caves 3 and 4 the easiest to scramble through. Interiors hold near 45 degrees, so pack layers, wear sturdy shoes, and carry three light sources since phone lights are not enough. Expect uneven rock, low ceilings, and no toilets or water on site, and leave dogs at home.
