Lava Lands Visitor Center anchors the Newberry National Volcanic Monument on Highway 97, about 11 miles south of Bend. The center interprets the dramatic lava landscape of the Deschutes National Forest, including the 500-foot Lava Butte cinder cone — a short trail leads to a 360-degree panoramic view of the Cascades. A paved road to the summit operates on a timed shuttle system in summer. The visitor center itself features geology exhibits and ranger programs. Surrounding lava flows and obsidian fields extend for miles; sturdy shoes are essential on the basalt paths. A Northwest Forest Pass or America the Beautiful pass is required.
