The landscape is otherworldly — black basalt formations, gnarled juniper snags, and wind-scoured ridges that open into sweeping views. October through May is the ideal season, when temperatures are comfortable and wildflowers bloom in spring. Summer heat can be severe; bring ample water for any hike. No facilities, no fee.
